CHARACTER
CHARACTER NAME: Q (specifically, Q2 or Q Jr, as the production notes occasionally call him)
SERIES: Star Trek: Voyager
CANON POINT: After the conclusion of Q2: season 7, episode 19.
LOSS: As a Q, Q is born with 'Q powers', or unlimited power over space, matter and time. In Paradisa, his powers will be severely limited; he can no longer manipulate space and time at all (ie he cannot transport or teleport objects or people, nor can he time travel or send other objects or people through time), and his powers of matter manipulation will be limited to himself (ie he can no longer change the appearances or physical states of others, and can only manipulate his own appearance and physical state). He will not be able to teleport himself, and he will longer be omnipotent.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER: (Please note that Q is a Q, which means he comes from a race of aliens who all have the same name: Q. In an attempt to avoid confusion, for this part of the app I'm going to refer to the Q I am aping as Q Jr, and refer to his father as Q Sr. But please note that Q Jr's real, true name is the same as all Q: just Q.)
Q Jr is impulsive, impetuous, impatient, spoiled, and generally bad-mannered. That's what happens when you give unlimited powers to a newborn, and then tell them it's their sole duty and purpose to revolutionize a timeless species of immortal aliens, the Q Continuum. Q Jr resented the responsibility (and the lack of guidance from his father) and acted out. Since he had unlimited powers, this wreaked a lot of havoc. Q Jr is said to have started wars in otherwise peaceful star systems-- just because he was bored! All the result of giving too much power to someone too young, who had a vested interest in proving himself irresponsible.
Q Sr didn't know what to do with Q Jr, so he did what any responsible parent would do. He dropped him at his godmother's doorstep and bolted. Q Sr took Q Jr to Captain Janeway, in the hopes that this would teach him something. And, to an extent, it worked; Q Jr learned a modicum of hard-won responsibility. While, at first, Q Jr refused to cooperate, he accidentally brought himself into a path leading directly to responsibility. Using his powers, Q Jr sewed a man's mouth shut (he deserved it), removed a woman's clothing, started a rave in the engine room, and at one point, brought Voyager into the direct path of Borg cubes. In retaliation, Q Sr took away Q Jr's powers, making him, essentially, human.
Q Sr said that the Q Continuum had deemed him unworthy of his powers, but wanted to rest him; Q Jr would spend the a while on Voyager, and try to prove himself sans powers. If Q Jr failed the test, he'd spend the rest of his life as an amoeba in a petri dish.
Q Jr... did not take this well. He acted out at first, cheating on tests and having a friend write an essay for him, but, with help from his new friends on the Voyager crew, he did slowly, eventually adapt. He became responsible. Q Sr came to observe him, to check on his progress, and Q Jr read aloud an essay he wrote-- himself, this time!-- and worked very hard on. Illustrating the differences and difficulty between the two, Q Sr was unimpressed, and refused to lie or pretend he cared. To Q Sr, Q Jr did not warrant unconditional support, nor did he merit undue attention. Q Jr, desiring the admiration and love of his father, did just as he'd done before: he acted out, messing up on purpose to make a point.
Q Jr stole the Delta Flyer II with his only friend, Icheb, aboard. Of course, reckless actions have consequences, and when you don't have powers, you can't just make the consequences disappear: Q Jr accidentally drove the flyer into dangerous alien territory, and Icheb was injured by some strange alien weapon, putting him in a coma. Panicking, Q Jr volunteered to trade his life for Icheb's, essentially taking full responsibility for his actions for the first time.
Q Sr was finally impressed, and said as much and more; it turned out all of this danger and peril was really a orchestrated entirely by him to test Q Jr's mettle. Icheb's life was saved. The Q Continuum, however, was still not pleased; they said they appreciated Q Jr's effort, but he hadn't earned back his powers. He could remain a human, but nothing more. Q Jr, feeling locked out of his identity, destiny, and inheritence, was reasonably distraut. However, he showed how he'd matured: he didn't break or steal anything. He didn't act out. He pouted and moped, but that's to be expected of a teenager. He was legitimately upset.
However, Q Sr finally stepped in: he blackballed the Q Continuum, threatening to leave if Q Jr's powers were not restored. This display of support was extremely important to Q Jr; it showed that his father did care for him, and wanted what was best for him. It cemented the lessons Q Jr had already learned: responsibility and empathy.
Q Jr learned he had to stick around and work hard at his goals, and he learned the value of life, when he almost lost his only friend, due to his own fault. Q Jr believes in himself more, now, and he believes he's capable of living up to his potential. And he understands that he needs to work hard at goals, and put in effort, and trust and value others and their opinions. Q Jr won't use his powers as an excuse, anymore. He won't just fast forward through the boring bits, and spruce everything up with his powers. He has to wait, and use effort, and get help. He has to work at it. He has to grow up.
But Q Jr isn't all grown up, yet. He's only existed for a year, technically, and though he has the mental and emotional capacity of a seventeen year old (oh, to be a Q!), he's still very young. He's prone to flights of fancy, whining, impatience, and childishness. Of course, unarguably, he's improved from how he was before. But he can still be a spoiled little shit if it strikes him. He's still a Q, naturally mischievous, impatient, and whimsical.
ABILITIES: Normally, Q is omnipotent with unlimited power over matter, space and time. However, due to his loss, Q will only have the power to manipulate his own matter.
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:
The castle was big, alright, but so boring. Well, yes, it's limitless, obviously, and it clearly had some kind of matter-manipulating technology-- very gamma quadrant, impressive, but not really shocking, not after you've seen the Resplendent Diamond Delta of Omnicron Six, anyway-- and it had some kind of neuroscan technology to tap into expectation. The thought that it was scanning him, though, scanning a Q? How presumptuous. He was going to have to have a talk with their leader, and not the I come in peace kind, let him tell you.
That was, as soon as he could get through their magnetic dampening fields. Really, that had to be what it was. Q had never heard of such a thing before-- and, really, a magnetic dampening field shouldn't actually work in the normal way of things, not against a Q-- but he couldn't think of any other explanation. And Q adapt. Well, not all Q. But this Q adapted to new situations. This Q was a new kind of Q, struck in a new mold. A savior, a prophet, a visionary. Forging new paths, changing the world for Q everywhere, saving lives, accomplishing goals, helping others, championing the innocent, rescuing maidens, being thanked by interesting and attractive species, being welcomed into their mating rituals- oh, was that a Jefferies tube?
No, just a corridor. Q stopped walking-- walking! Really! He was a Q! At least his powers worked enough to allow him to float in the air, which he now did, a respectable foot and a half above the ground-- to stare at it. Who even had corridors anymore, really? What was this, Human Baroque Era? The Baroque Tribe had corridors, right? Q tries to check, but he can't shift through time (stupid) and he can't even see back into time (stupider!). He folds his arms in front of his chest, harrumphing loudly, before continuing on.
He'd already tried getting a link through on his combadge (no use!) and trying to find a PADD with a map uploaded. He'd found a little book thing, but, ugh, books. Most civilized races were past using wood pulp to accomplish tasks. Really, this was all quaint, but rather Cro-Magnon (an odd phrase that he couldn't check because of these mĭksyĕz′pĭtlĭk-damned dampening fields!). Still, it was the last interesting thing to happen before the Jefferies tube incident. Maybe it was worth a go?
Q opened the book, and thumbed through it, learning it, reading it, before he went about trying to interact with it. In his best attempt at a booming voice, he said: "I come in peace! Take me to your leader!"
FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE: One, and two.
INTENT: In the game, I'd like to let Q grow up the whole way. Q does a lot of growing in the one episode in which he appears, but I'd like to give him more time and experience to really let those lessons sink in, and see how they effect Q moving forward. He's still a kid, and I'd like to let him really blossom into his own person, like he's just beginning to by the end of the episode.
